Our Librarian

The Summit library is located in room 403 and houses over 7,000 books of various kinds for students and teachers to use and enjoy. Elementary classes come weekly to the library, and avid readers are always welcome. The library

  • Contributes to curriculum support.
  • Helps teach library rules and procedures.
  • Introduces students to library skills.
  • Encourages a life-long desire to read and learn.

Our Reading Program

Elementary students will participate in Scholastic Reading Counts!, an independent reading program with thousands of quizzes of best-loved titles. SCA currently has approximately 700 books that have corresponding quizzes in the SRC program, and we have purchased nearly 1,000 quizzes for our SRC database. Through Scholastic Reading Counts! we can follow the titles that students are reading, and know how well students comprehend what they read. Students participating in Scholastic Reading Counts! will

  • Choose books to read. We have many books in our library that have corresponding quizzes in the Scholastic Reading Counts! program. Students are encouraged to select reading books from this extensive list of book titles.
  • Take a quiz on the computer to check comprehension. We have installed the Scholastic Reading Counts! program on computers in the library and in the computer lab so students can take quizzes during their library and computer classes. Also, the library is open until 4:00 P.M. daily, and parents may bring their child into the library after school to take a quiz.
  • Receive instant feedback, including reward points and congratulatory screens for passing quizzes. These rewards include individual rewards, and class rewards.

  • Individual Rewards:
    • Pass a quiz: 1 piece of candy
    • Pass five quizzes: Bookmark or pencil
    • Pass ten quizzes: Candy bar

    Class Rewards:
Class rewards are based on meeting class goals. Class goals require that each student in the class earn points from the quizzes he/she has taken.
    • 2nd and 3rd grade students: 15 points each month
    • 4th and 5th grade students: 20 points each month
    • 6th grade students: 25 points each month

Every month Mrs. Moss will reward every class that reaches their goal and has 100% participation.

Our Parents

Supporting reading at home will help your child become a lifelong reader. Here are some useful tips:

  • If your child has an interest in a specific sport or hobby, encourage him/her to read about it.
  • Talk about what your child is reading. Ask questions about the plot or about fun facts, if it's nonfiction.
  • Try to find a variety of reading materials for your child to experience: fiction, nonfiction, magazines, newspapers, humorous books, recipes, maps, etc.

Our Friends

As SCA continues to improve its library, it welcomes the help of friends and families. Donations of books will help us expand our library. Donations of money will help us to buy additional reading quizzes for the books we have.

Please contact Cindy Drake at 251-1997 ext. 403 or e-mail her at cdrake@sca-eagles.com if you would like to become a friend of our library.

Our Policies

  • Books are checked out for one week.
  • Books may be re-checked for one additional week.
  • Anyone who loses a book will have to pay for the book.
